Watching seeds sprout is a great activity for kids and parents, particularly when seeds sprout quickly. Alfalfa ( Medicago the sativa) is a simple to cultivate seed which should sprout in around a week. To watch the seeds germinate in the soil, sprinkle a few alfalfa seeds over a piece of paper towel that is damp.

You Will Need:
A packet of Alfalfa seeds (about 1.5g).
A small bowl or small plate
Three paper towels
A spray mister or a small water Jug

How to Grow:
Get 3 pieces of paper towels and lay them on top one another flat on a plate.
Take the water off the plate. The paper towel needs to be damp however the seeds must not be floating in the water.
Spread the seeds evenly onto the towel.
Place the dish on a window with a bright sun and water to stop the paper towel from drying out. You can use spray bottles or misters to soak the seeds or gently add a small quantity of water into the saucer using a small jug or cup.
You should check your seeds daily to see how they're growing.

Troubleshooting

Too dry Seeds need water to develop. Alfalfa seeds absorb around their weight in water prior to germinating, making them look like they are swollen. Seeds that are not moist enough won't sprout. It is also possible to soak your seeds overnight; just make sure you drain them and rinse them with fresh water before spreading them onto the paper towel.
